MAG PRESS RELEASE
3-11-09
For immediate use
Bikers' group MAG applauds Birmingham bus lane decision
MAG applauds the decision by Birmingham City Council to open its bus lanes to
motorcycles. In an effort to make more effective and efficient use of its
roads, Birmingham City Council recently completed an experiment allowing
motorcycles to use bus lanes. The policy allows motorcyclists to see and be seen
in congested traffic.
The Birmingham experiment confirmed the experience of other towns and cities,
that allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes was beneficial to motorcyclists, with
no disadvantages to other road users.
MAG in Birmingham and nation-wide has been campaigning on this issue for years,
first winning access to bus lanes throughout Bristol in 1996.
London opened all of its major route bus lanes to motorcycles recently and now
the second biggest city in the country has followed suit.
MAG President Ian Mutch said ‘There seems to be an outbreak of sanity among
local authorities all over the country, this is great news and shows how MAG’s
campaigning is helping to produce real results for riders.

Hi Richard. Have mail u some photos of our trip to the Benelux Rally, via Switzerland, Monte-Carlo, Beaune. You pick those you feel suitable for the web, by the way this is the new “Monarch of the Glen”. Cheers, Whiskey

Richard, Here is a copy of a mail from my boss Willie C. I would also like to extend my thanks to all the boys and girls who came along on Sunday to help make the day for the hospital, there was in excess of 250 bikes and scooters there of which over 150 were Harleys. Jock Coleman the organiser said it just blew everybody away when we came in, everybody was smiling and it was just a great day. Richard thanks again for putting it up on your website, maybe next year we can exceed the turnout and donation.
Jimmy Mair
Hi Jimmy
Please extend my thanks to all at Scottish HD & Dunedin HOG & friends for taking the time to ride through to Hillington in support of all at Erskine Hospital event. I am informed that 250 bikes plus attended the event & raised a staggering £1500. Thanks for your assistance also, A sight for sore eyes! All these Harleys with wise men from the East bearing gifts {riding their Harleys} arriving En Mass at meeting point. A personal thank you to all Clyde Valley HOG who turned out for the short ride to Erskine Hospital. If you were not there , then you missed a Cracker of a ride to the event!

Richard, would it be possible to have the following transcript of email received from Claire Auton regarding the Shire Blood Run which some of the Chapter attended. I also have a number of photos re same on disc which I could give you at June meeting for web also. Thanks in anticipation. Frank McGregor Lonerider
Hello Everyone!
Thank you all for attending the Shire Blood Run last week - I hope you (and all those wonderful people who came along but did not leave an email address!) had a good day! I just wanted to let you know that 75 people attended the session and 51 units of blood were collected. 44 of those attending were first time donors which for a new session is a fantastic result! Each donation can be split into 3 parts, therefore you have helped save or improve the lives of potentially 153 people! Amazing! I really hope you enjoyed the day, the great atmosphere was commented on by both visitors and staff. A huge amount of positive publicity was generated on Northsound, STV and in the press. Please pass on my thanks to every one involved - you should be very proud of what was achieved. Here's hoping we can make it an annual event! Thanks again for your interest and support, it is very much appreciated!
Best wishes,
Claire

On behalf of the Friends of Turriff Community Hospital I wish to convey our sincere thanks to you and your fellow bikers for the generous donation of £552 given to us following the May Day celebrations. Once again the immaculate bikes proved a major attraction on the day. Since starting in 2001you have raised over £3,000-00 for us and we are privileged to have received your support every year. The refurbishment of the hospital Day Room was finished before Christmas and we are now in discussion with the hospital management on upgrading one of the single rooms. In between times various items have been purchased for use within the medical practice and hospital. Please convey our warm thanks and appreciation to all concerned. With our Best Wishes to you all. Happy and Safe Biking. Yours sincerely, MRS MARGARET HENDRY SECRETARY

Some years ago the Oxford UK Chapter "adopted" a very sick young boy named Jake Spicer. Jake suffers from a particularly pernicious cancer called Neuroblastoma. He has been fighting this disease for years and at 13 has spent most of his life in and out of the JR hospital in Oxford. Last year he became our youngest Chapter member.
Sadly the doctors have recently told Jake that they can do no more for him. A specialist palliative care nurse has suggested that the only thing left is the power of positive thought - and I have never met anyone as positive as this kid. Nevertheless, as positive as Jake is he needs help.
To this end we have set up a web site where people can leave messages of support. We at the Oxford Chapter would be extremely grateful if you would ask your members to log on to www.jake-spicer.webs.com and just leave a few words of support and comfort. If you have contacts in overseas Chapters and feel inclined to get them to help too then so much the better. Who knows, if enough of us do it then it might just have some effect. Thank you, Pete Davies, Director, Oxford UK Chapter

Dear Fellow Harley Owners Group member,
I was searching interesting rides in Europe and Australia and came across your chapter photos. First, let me say that I own and have owned many motorcycles and have driven across half of the Unites States and seen many a strange and unusual site in many “states of dress and undress” at many rallies across the USA. However, I have had more fun discussing and sharing with others, and have sent photos of the two gentlemen Harley Riders wearing kilts to my lady rider friends and believe it or not…. my mechanic. My lady rider friends and I think it is AWESOME! In knowing how difficult it is to keep an un-tucked t-shirt from blowing up on the interstate we want to know how to keep a kilt down on the interstate or at least above 30 miles per hour!
Additionally, I would like to say that through looking at your photos on the internet, that Scotland looks like a wonderful place to ride and tour. Please also know that your photos show what pride you take in your rides but as a group, a clan ( I loved the clan colors) and a country to visit and ride through.
Your chapter photos gave me new look at HOG members around the world. I loved it!
God bless you.
Sincerely,
Martha C. Wolkonsky
H.O.G. Member of the Cool Springs Chapter in Franklin, Tennessee. USA
For Thunder in the Glens Rally this year we have booked for the Sunday Night the fantastic Route 66 Musical Show who are presently touring UK Theatres. The show comes complete with live backing band, dancers and lead singers and features The Rev. Dr. Clive Jackson who created and still is The Doctor of Doctor and the Medics.
This show would normally cost about £15.50 a ticket but we have included this as part of the Rally entertainment. It’s not just a show to sit and listen to, you can get up and dance as well, so if you get the urge just move your feet to the dance floor. If you’re thinking of leaving on Sunday, don’t, this is a show not to be missed check them out at: http://www.theshowproviders.biz/index.php?option=com_shows&show=7&Itemid=99

Edinburgh Harley-Davidson are delighted to announce that they are now offering bike servicing appointments on Saturdays with effect from Saturday 6th October 2007. The Saturday servicing is only available by prior booking of appointments and is not open to customers just turning up. It is strictly by prior appointment only. This may result in high demand, we will have to wait and see, but if it does it will also mean that lead in times could be lengthy. Therefore if you do want to book a Saturday appointment for servicing please make sure you do so in good time. It may be unreasonable to expect the first Saturday of your choice. If this proves successful who knows what it might lead to. To book your service call Edinburgh Harley-Davidson on 0131 348 3200
A TIP FOR HARLEY RIDERS
This year I decided to do something a little more adventurous on my Harley. I rode from Scotland to the European Rally at Fuengirola, a good friend was going to come with me, but circumstances prevented him from going so I went alone. Before setting off, West Coast Harley-Davidson of Glasgow checked my Softail Standard over; and the bike was fine. However, the petrol gauge jammed on "full" 2 days before leaving; it was a minor fault and West Coast H-D sorted it out for me quickly so I can't speak highly enough about their service manager Eric McWaters.
The day I left was the day that England was hit with torrential rain and floods so it wasn't a pleasant first day. The bike behaved impeccably and I arrived safely but soaked at my Stoke-on-Trent hotel in time for happy hour (half-price beer!!). More of the same weather the next day en route to Portsmouth. Lots of Harley owners on the ferry, the count was 187 Harleys on board so lots of great folk to chat with. I met John Goodfellow from Chesterfield also travelling alone so we agreed to travel together to Fuengirola with a stop at Madrid. Very busy roads leaving Bilbao but we were soon clear of traffic and on our way to the Spanish capital, a great ride with the bikes running really well, until we got to Madrid then very busy roads. John and his sat-nav steered us to the hotel which could not have been found unless you knew your way around Madrid really well.
The next day was just as good but warmer weather, a superb ride to Fuengirola but not before an exciting sortie through the centre of Madrid during rush-hour courtesy of the sat-nav giving us the "shortest route". We saw more and more Harleys on the road, on their way to the rally.
A great rally; Fuengirola was a great place to hold it. the organisation was excellent and the local people very welcoming. The weather was faultless as were the bands, the bars, the Harley service people, the food and it was good see a few Scots there. Some were on holiday unfortunately "bikeless", some had their bikes transported there and a few had ridden there. I met our Clyde Valley Chapter photographer Ian Venart and we did the custom bike show together where a Clyde Valley Chapter member won the water-cooled class!!!!!!! brilliant! It was good to meet Marjorie Ragg again on the Saturday night, we had met at "The Gathering" in Ayr in '06 and '07. We met again in Aviemore for Thunder in the Glens this year '07. It proves she's genuinely keen about Harley-Davidson and Chapter riders.
All too soon the rally was over and it was time to head for home. I was lucky to meet up with another lone Scottish biker Ken Whitson from the Edinburgh Dunedin Chapter, so we travelled north together with a stop-over at Madrid. Ken was heading to France and I was going to Bilbao. The first day was warm dry, perfect biking weather and bikes were excellent, again the Madrid traffic was hellish and Ken's sat-nav steered us safely to the hotel. However when I tried to start my bike and get it into the hotel car park the key fob would not work. We were in an area with a heavy military presence and all radio signals were blocked. Sh*t!! I had no idea how to overcome this so even though we pushed a long way form the hotel - no success, so fingers crossed it was pushed into the hotel underground car park, thanks to being underground three floors and protected by the concrete structure the fob worked. Ken had started his Softail with no problems because he knew the procedure. So here's my tip and I can't recommend it highly enough:- MEMORISE, THEN PRACTISE THE PROCEDURE TO SWITCH ON YOUR IGNITION WITHOUT USING YOUR KEY-FOB.
We travelled north together the following day, the weather was unexpectedly cold, but another great ride. Eventually Ken peeled off towards France and I went on to Bilbao. While trying to find accommodation in Bilbao the same problem with the key fob occurred at an Opel garage, fortunately I was on a hill so I could free-wheel away from the area and all was well. I met lots of familiar friendly home-going Harley folk on the ferry and we swapped tales of the trip, some good and some hilarious navigation tales especially the husband and wife stories!!! No divorces yet I hope!!! After spending a few days in Sussex with a cousin I headed north to bonnie Scotland on Sunday. The bike was absolutely brilliant so even though the weather wasn't too good the ride was excellent.
Quite an adventure for a 61 year old who waited 45 years to get his Harley, passed the direct access test 2 years ago and bought his first bike:- a Harley-Davidson. I just wish I had done it years ago.
Thank you Harley-Davidson, West Coast H-D, Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Chapter.
Regards, Peter Gittins, from Stirling

Dear Chapter Director,
In the Summer issue of Hog Tales, Harley-Davidson UK and H.O.G. UK announced their plans to launch two new e-publications in June and July. The first monthly E-zine from Harley-Davidson UK has been and will be distributed to all current and potential Harley-Davidson owners. So far the response has been positive.
The second, being launched in July, is a H.O.G. UK E-newsletter. There will be four of these a year which will be distributed in between the mailing of Hog Tales, so all H.O.G. UK members - who have supplied an e-mail address - will receive H.O.G. UK news 8 times a year four in print, and four by email. The first issue is due to be distributed by mid-July so please advise your members that they will need to contact member services and update their member details with an e-mail address or create a member profile on hog.com to receive it.
In addition to the UK/Eire edition of Hog Tales, future issues of the E-newsletter will give you another opportunity to promote your Chapter events to all UK HOG members and get your news published as you used to in the printed version of HOG News UK. The deadline for submissions of copy and pictures for inclusion in the October E-newsletter is 1st October. Stories and photos should be sent to Zoe Francis at Archant Dialogue: zoe.francis@archantdialogue.co.uk. Most of you met her at the Chapter Directors meeting last November. Please note that all submissions should comply with the H.O.G. operating guidelines and are subject to approval by H.O.G. UK.
Could you please pass this information on to your Chapter Editors and Chapter Photographers and encourage them to maximize publicity for your Chapter through these communication channels? I'll look forward to hearing your feedback after you have received the first issue. As always, your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Best regards, Marj

Thought this may be of interest. I was at T in the Park last week and as you can see I came across 'The Hairy Bikers' apparently they were up at Kinross giving demonstrations on healthy cooking. Didn't look as if there was much cooking going on, more like healthy beer drinking. Anyway they both asked after everyone in the Chapter.

While travelling south last weekend, Lin and I decided to go via the Tyne Tunnel, Mistake! As we approached the tolls I noticed that the alarm system on my 2007 Road King Started chirping. When we stopped at the tolls the alarm went off and the bike would not start. We had to push the bike clear of the tolls and at this point the bike started fine without any alarm problems. We both had a proximity fob with us at the time and I couldn't see them both failing at the same time. The only answer I can get is that something at the tolls of the Tyne Tunnel appears to interfere with the alarm system on 2007 models. This is not by any means gospel but what I believe happened. So, if you are heading via the Tyne Tunnel on your 2007 model beware. Just in case.

You guys look like you have a very cool chapter. One of the guys who has ridden with us, Ride Free, is from Scotland, and he has become a legend in our parts. I like the Dunedin HOG 2007 schedule, however, I think your chapter would enjoy an added USA ride for '07 or 2008. We've provided amazing Harley-Davidson rides in the USA for many people from the U.K. (Many references available).
If you would like to propose a USA ride to your HOG chapter, we'd be happy to arrange the bikes, insurance, lodging, chase vehicle, everything. All you guys have to do is enjoy riding on Old Route 66, along Grand Canyon, California Beaches, etc. Also, if you have a group of ten bikes or more, the organizer on your end will ride for free, including round trip airfare to Los Angeles.
To see what our rides are like, check out http://www.ridefree.com (check out the photos as well). If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to the possibility of riding with you!
Lastly, we are going to update our links page soon, so let me know if you want me to add your HOG chapter to it.
All the best,
Erik

Guys,
Completed the installation of my CB radio onto the RK Classic at the weekend, works a treat - listened in on a great conversation over the weekend between 2 older guys and the cost of a nip at the local British Legion! Clear as a bell. The only piece left to do is the PTT button {Press to Talk} which only requires positioning, still undecided. I wanted to install the CB to help with comms on the road. {did not have enough cash to by an Ultra Classic}. The only issue I will have is channel changing which requires a road stop {coffee break} the plan around this will be to agree a channel with all prior to the run then carry on from there, change channel at the next stop if there is too much verbal traffic on the previously selected channel. All trial and error 'til I / we get used to it. The website has all sorts of CB gizmo's to choose from, worth a visit {website below} Could also be used as a 2 way radio when away from the bike.
My initial purchases were:
1 x Handheld Midlands 42 CB radio package {no batteries included} £99
1 x External Aerial {radio supplied with a small rubber aerial} £20
1 x Aerial Mount c/w coax cable £13
1 x Open face comms set £40
1 x Full face comms set £40
All the above can be viewed on - www.thunderpole.co.uk - Delivered next day {just like it says on the site}

Last year I showed a print of a previous painting to some of your guys at the Redgarth here in Oldmeldrum and received a good response and some sales, so planning to go to the next meeting to show them my latest offering. My work can be viewed at www.alliwantisaharley.com where I have my latest painting on display as well as other work.
Cheers, Ian Matthew

Hi Richard
Could you possibly add the following link to the website? www.campingandmilitary.co.uk It is my wife’s new business and before anyone asks, no we are not selling Kalashnikovs, well not yet. This site provides an extensive range of camping and outdoor equipment for the leisure and military enthusiast including, Tents, Sleeping Bags, Rucksacks, Walking Boots, etc. So go on treat yourself to a new tent for the Gathering or Thunder in the Glens!
We are offering an initial 10% discount for everyone up until 26th May. After that all chapter members will continue to get 10% discount. They will be asked to enter a discount code to get this. I will forward this on next week. However, I don't want the discount code on the web as it is open to anyone to see. I'd rather it was communicated via the Newsletter.
Cheers!

Hi Richard, Just a wee note of warning that you may want to pass on.
I was talking to Bill McArthur a while back and he told me that he was out on a run up to Callander recently. While up that way he was pulled over by the police and given a warning about the size of his number plate and the noise of his pipes. As I say he was only given a warning but the officer did tell him to spread the word that the police in that area will be coming down heavy on future two wheeled offenders. So if you or anyone you know is heading out that way at any time beware and consider yourselves warned!

Hi, We met briefly at the last meeting (lea park) where I had just joined as a new member & was wondering if I could get a link added in the 'back of the garage' section for my recent venture.
All the best, Alex Adams
Hi Richard,
Found some old motorcycle magazines while clearing out. Found some interesting adverts and have scanned them. If you find them useful they could be called Nostalgia, Fun, Remember When, or "I wish the prices were like that today".
With Kindest Regards, John Haldane & Lin Grahame

HAPPY DAYS HOSTEL
Anyone who finds themselves in the Aviemore/Kingussie area (by design or otherwise) and wants to spend the night please read on. There is a very pleasant purpose built, recently opened hostel on the main street in Kingussie called "HAPPY DAYS HOSTEL". We have been in it and found it more than reasonable in facilities and price. The following is from their brochure but it is all true as we have seen it (we had the cooks tour when we were there).
Facilities are: 4 rooms with 4 beds, 5 rooms with 6 beds, 2 rooms twin/double. All with en-suite and shaver points, Central heating and individual bed reading lights. Fully equipped self catering kitchen, Drying room, TV lounge, internet access, disabled access/room. If you don't do the 'self catering thing' then they have a lovely breakfast/sandwich/coffee bar, again with very reasonable prices.
Prices start at £11.00 person per night with special family rates. If you would like more information phone Steven on 01540 661175. There is also a web site:- www.happydayshostel.co.uk
As well as all of the above they also have the most important thing SECURE BIKE PARKING.
Thanks
Stay Lucky

We are Peter & Wendy Bartlett and on 29th April 2005 took over the Rockvilla Hotel in Lochcarron.
Being keen bikers and having moved up from Sheffield where we were members of the Peak Riders Chapter in Chesterfield, we took over the hotel with a view to making it Biker Friendly to encourage the many tourers who come to the West Highlands
Consequently we are running a package consisting of Bed, Full Scottish Breakfast, Three Course Evening Meal and a packed lunch for the next day's ride at £60.00 incl per double or twin room (All our rooms have either en suite or their own private facilities) and £40.00 for single occupancy.
We can be found at www.rockvilla-hotel.co.uk and Pete or Wendy can be contacted on 01520 722379.
